Tree Removal at Cambridge Battery, Point Pleasant Park, Winter 2009 (HRM) |
Tree Thinning On Fortifications
2008-2009 HRM Urban Forestry crews, Parks staff, contractors, and archaeologists will be thinning tree stands on fortifications in Point Pleasant Park in December 2008 and January 2009. Approximately one-third of trees growing on/near Cambridge Battery and North West Arm Battery will be cut and removed as the first phase in the protection of these heritage assets. The work is being done in keeping with the cultural resource management guidelines set out in the Point Pleasant Park Comprehensive Plan. Vegetation control around cultural resources is essential to avoid potential damage from upturned roots resulting from wind-thrown trees. Clearing the trees will also reestablish traditional sightlines from the forts to the harbour. Work on the forts will take place over the next few years, with the gradual removal of trees year by year. |
