Winter In Point Pleasant Park
Frosty mornings, icy fog and the occasional blanket of snow are signs that winter has arrived in Point Pleasant Park.
The winter environment in the park is beautiful, but highly changeable, and tricky to navigate at times unless you are properly prepared.
Point Pleasant Park has reduced services in the winter months, so preparing ahead of your visit is necessary.
Snow Clearing of Park Roads
Snow and ice clearing is necessary to keep the park accessible during the winter, and the safety of park visitors and staff is our top priority. To make it safer, easier, and faster for the staff to make the park walkable again after a snow fall, please:
- give way to snow removal equipment,
- leash your dog when snow clearing crews are working in the park,
- avoid visiting the park when weather & road conditions have deteriorated.
Snow clearing generally begins within 24 hours of the end of a snow event. Plowing does not occur during extreme weather conditions (blizzards, ice storms).
After snow clearing has been completed crusher dust (fine gravel) is spread on park roads to reduce slip hazards. In the winter of 2010-2011, 38 tons of crusher dust was spread on Point Pleasant Park roads.
The following main roads are not plowed in the winter: Fort Road, Serpentine Road, Tower Hill Road, Maple Road. Secondary roads and trails are not plowed.
Snow Clearing of Parking Lots
Parking lots are not cleared by Point Pleasant Park staff, but are generally cleared within 36 hours of the end of a snow event. Parking lot service issues are to be directed to the HRM Call Centre: 490-4000 (please have the agent note it as a "parking lot service issue").
Washroom Services
During the winter, washroom services are reduced. Washrooms available during the winter are located at:
- Shakespeare by the Sea (rear of building): 8 a.m. to dusk.
- Cable Road Washrooms (corner of Cable Road & Serpentine Road): 8 a.m. to dusk.
Garbage Pickup
Park staff empty garbage cans twice weekly.
